What we Stand For

Vision

Independent Citizens is focused on the future of Christchurch - making it the best city to live, work and raise a family in New Zealand. This requires us to have strong, local leadership that gets the basics right, and ensures we make good decisions today so future generations don't pay the price. We back elected members who will listen and lead to help prepare Christchurch for a strong, prosperous future.

Purpose

Independent Citizens runs a robust selection process to put forward quality candidates with the ability and proven track record to perform in their roles. We select strong, capable individuals who have the hearts, minds and relevant experience to add real value to our city and community. We don't tell them how to vote - our constitution forbids that. Our candidates think for themselves, and that's exactly what you should expect from them too. They're accountable to you, as the voter. Independent Citizens candidates' have shared values, but our driving force is quality, not ideology.

Values

Local Democracy

A city for Christchurch by Christchurch is worth fighting for. We strongly value local democracy that provides fair and effective local representation for all residents.

Sensible and Smarter Spending

Council money is ratepayer money, so ensuring that your hard earned ratepayer dollars are spent sensibly - and every dollar is made to count - is of the utmost importance.

The Planet

We only have one Earth and we think it's essential to look after it. We value finding the right balance in making decisions today while helping to protect and enhance our natural environment for the future.

Core Services

Having core council services delivered effectively and efficiently is a non-negotiable for us. Roads, footpaths, water infrastructure, and maintaining our parks and playgrounds is fundamental for a city that works.

Supporting Business

We don't want to do the job of the private sector, but we are committed to ensuring that businesses are helped and not hindered by the Council. We want our local businesses to prosper so jobs and the local economy can grow.
